Crystalline Gold from the famous Carson Hill Mines, Calaveras County, California.  Early specimens contained rich Telluride minerals with the Gold-- principally Hessite and Petzite.  Later attempts were made, to crush the waste dumps and market the material to the California Department of Highways (CALTRAN).  Nugget traps were installed on the gravel sorting circuits and these specimens were  recovered as a result.   Gold shows bright, reflective luster, and a brassy-yellow color. There are a few% Quartz, and trace Petzite?

MOTHER LODE!!!  Specimen Gold from the famous Carson Hill Mines, Calaveras County, California.  Lode Gold was discovered in 1850 where extremely rich Gold ore was blasted from near surface Quartz veins ..principally from the Morgan mine.   Open pit mining from the 1980s to 1991 attempted to mine the deposit by consolidating the various deposits. These early specimens contained rich Telluride minerals with the Gold-- principally Hessite and Petzite. CHINESE GOLD!!!!! Beautiful crystalline specimen exhibiting brilliant, lively luster and a rich orangish color. Pseudo-crystal faces probably from Quartz crystals intergrown with the Gold, these faces show brilliant mirror-like surfaces, some appear as thin Gold leaf. Sparse Octoheadral crystal development observed. Somewhat more Hackly appearance. Small trace of Quartz matrix remains as well as  small % Petzite.  I obtained these specimens at an International Gem and Mineral Exhibition in Changsha China in May, 2014.  These were the ONLY Chinese Gold specimens in the entire show. Seems the Chinese Government does not allow miners to sell to anyone other than the Government owned and controlled refiners. (That is my interpretation) I am sorry they are sooo expensive...but I had to pay dearly to get them myself. Only through my Chinese wifes wonderful negotiating skills was I able to obtain these pieces. I dont know very much geologic detail about the deposit.

However, it is 50% Gold and 50% Silver by volume..not weight... as Gold is twice as heavy as Silver.  Gold is a bright, lustrous, pale-yellow color with a trace of a bronzy color and occurs as ribbons, grains, and leaves in a quartz matrix as a lens. This was probably mined around 1900s. From an old collection.  Specimen has been treated with Mineral Oil to enhance the Gold..if desired it can be removed by soaking in hot water or alcohol.  Housed in a 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 inch perky box.
